The Elf on the Shelf

Product Details

The children received "The Elf on the Shelf" as a gift last year and I have to admit, that I didn't really like the idea of it at first.  I thought that it was silly and placed emphasis on the secular idea of being good to be rewarded by Santa rather than preparing your heart for the birth of Jesus.  What I've discovered is that it's really neither, it's just plain fun.  Every morning the children eagerly come downstairs to find where Zelfie (what we named our elf) is hiding.  It's like a new "Where's Waldo" right in our house every day!  My 7 year old asked me tonight whether or not Zelfie was real.  We talked for a bit and I had to come clean with him and let him know that it was me who moved him around.  He's okay with that and is just as excited to try and find him in the morning.

Here are a few of the places that Zelfie has been found these past couple weeks:
Sitting on top of the entertainment center

In a light fixture above the fireplace

On top of a light fixture in the bathroom
(yes, you have to behave even in the bathroom!)

Sitting on top of the vertical shades

Hanging out next to our wedding picture

I hope that you are all having a joyous Advent season.  I know that "The Elf on the Shelf" really doesn't qualify as preparation for Christmas, but it has become one of the things that the children look forward to this time of year...and I think that I'm okay with that!

God Bless!

Heather :-)

  1. How cute!!!! I've seen him - around LOL - but never purchased him...he was a tad expensive. I would have loved to have received him as a gift though! And you know, there is nothing wrong with having some sweet, innocent fun during our holy seasons. Good for you all! Advent blessings to you!

  2. Fun is something that I need to remember to make more time for. With homeschooling, I'm always trying to make the most of our time - make things as educational as possible. But, I'm learning that a little fun goes a long way for the moral of the house. :-)
